Ever wonder what I'm thinking?

Oct 22 2017 Books I've EnjoyedCategory: About Me     03:41PM   0

I'm a big fan of reading, and I love filling my library with works gifted by suitors! Since I enjoy sharing books with my "real life" friends, I thought it would be fun to share a few with "Charlotte's friends", too. I like to read books that are about nature (human or animal), and history. The occasional biography or work of fiction helps keep me from being too studious, too ;-)

This is just a short list, and I would love to hear your thoughts if you've read one of them! And if you'd like to gift me a book, I hope this gives you a little taste of what I like ;-)

The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration into the Wonder of Conciousness - Sy Montgomery. Purchase.
Most scuba divers who have seen an octopus know they're a little different. Unlike most fish, they really notice you, and a lot of them will hang around to check you out. This is a story of getting to know captive octopuses, but it's filled with information that will make you look at the wild ones in a whole new way.

The Anatomy of Violence: The Biological Roots of Crime - Adrian Raine. Purchase.
While there's a lot of "lingo" in this book, there's also a lot of interesting information.

The Selfish Gene - Richard Dawkins. Purchase.
Selfish isn't always a bad thing! How and why propagation occurs, and the meaning behind good deeds.

As Nature Made Him - John Colapinto. Purchase
Do you have any idea how close you were to never being who you are?

The Hidden Life of Trees - Peter Wohlleben. Purchase.
I know, I know. We tend to look at plants as objects, and this wouldn't be the first time I've been accused of being a hippie while talking about it. But do you have any idea of the community you have in your back yard? Just read it. Then you can know for yourself I'm at worst a realist ;-p

Wild Connection - Jennifer L. Verdolin. Purchase.

This is a fun read, full of interesting and just risque enough facts that you'll be a hit at the next party!

Running with Scissors - Augusten Burroughs. Purchase.
I love Augusten's writing style. Some have accused it of being simple. I say it is direct, like Occam's razor.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks - Rebecca Skloot. Purchase.
I mean, you want to hear a crazy story? This woman's cells have driven cancer research, and have mutated to the point that scientists are debating naming them as an entirely new type.

Moon Walking with Einstein - Joshua Foer. Purchase.
This is a cute, quick read that somehow simultaneously improves your memory, and makes you grateful for the ability to forget.

The Art of Racing in the Rain - Garth Stein. Purchase.
Talk about a tear jerker! This story is beautifully told from the dog's perspective, and will remind you to look for the little treasures in every day life.

Thank You For Arguing - Jay Henrichs. Purchase.
For the efficiency readers. I really like to feel like I learned something after I've read a book, and this provided a few good insights and exercises, without the judgemental tone some "career books" can take on.

You Are Not So Smart - David McRaney. Purchase
Another quick, fun read. While the title is pretty self explanatory, you'll feel better than it implies when you're done reading ;-)

Contagious: Why Things Catch On - Jonah Berger. Purchase
One of my short falls is that I tend to hang back in groups, avoiding stepping on any toes, or getting my good ideas out there, all at the same time. If you're not the type to bring your idea up over and over and over again in meetings, maybe it'd help if you consolidated your efforts into a more efficient manner ;-)

The Art of Seduction - Robert Greene. Purchase.
I like this book because it reminds you to look at who you are talking to. Even when you're trying to generalize, each person must be treated as an individual.
